It has been a while since the last post. Even consultants need vacation. That's the time when they usually get sick. But let's not diverge and get serious right away. Comparing lives does not sound particularly beneficial. First of all, focusing on the past is not the way to go on the path to achievement. Second, comparing 'lives' is complicated, because you have to gather a lot of information. Most of that information will be private, so probably most of the time you will not have sufficient data or any clue at all. This will lead you -most of the time- to bad assumptions.  However you can -and should- compare achievements. This is what people do all the time. Take a public 10k run. Most participants will be there for the fun, a lot of participants will be quite competitive and some will even put in all they can in order to achieve a good or even top result. That does not necessarily mean, they compete against each other. Sometimes beating yourself, setting ...

Welcome back everybody. Here we go again with the series 'How to not suck at consulting'. It has been a while since my last post, but things are running a little crazy at the moment for me.   May has traditionally lots of legal holidays, so it is supposed to be a pleasure from a worker's point of view. If you have multiple projects running simultaniously, the circumstances can differ slightly. It's all about deliverables and delivering. Customers seem to care little about the difference between working days and calendar days. However there's nothing more pathetic than a consultant or even a manager complaining about excess workloads. So let's get to the point.   Well, yes and no. Yes, meaning you should care about the food you eat and how much of it you eat. Basically, food and nutrition are crucial. And no, food is one piece of the puzzle, but the whole picture is your health. So you should eat whatever nourishes your heath. In consulting, tha...

Create value - Ask yourself, what benefits your customer most. 2. Make a point - After all analysis and evaluation, put your findings in few comprehensive points. Pick the most crucial ones (A-issues) and drop the rest - yes, just cut it out. 3. Enjoy - most of the time, you'll love what you're doing. That is the easy part, because fo lks tend to be best at things the y enjoy and are passionate about. But once in a while, you won't en joy everything . Be a professional: Embrace the suck! It's part of consulting . :-D And now, back to the game: 40 tips of how not to suck at consulting. First one is a good point relate d to customers. Your customers are not only the ones you can bill. Hi 5 and welcome back to 40 awesome tips how not to give advice. This time we start off with a drinking advice. These are always very popular, like my favourite: Don't drink and drive. I take that very seriously, especially since I have been riding a bigger motorbike for years. There's very few cases in which I claim to have adapted to a zero tolerance policy. However this is one of those things, where the red line is pretty clear for obvious reasons. Back to 40 awesome tips, we have a suggestion to drink plenty of water, at least 2 litres each day. Sounds reasonable, you say? Why water? Why can't you drink 2 litres of tea, lemonade, coffee, milk, or anything that isn't hazardous to your health, i.e. basically non-alcoholic and sugar-free? Do people who weigh 100 kg or more and those who weigh 60kg or less have to stick to the lower bound of 2 litres? Do people who exercise and people who don't eqaually have to go with 2 litres as a reference point? In summer ...

40 awesome tips of how consulting just doesn't work No wine this time, but enough expert advice to analize. Without further ado, here we go. Tip no 6 tells you not to take yourself too seriously, because no one else does. I guess the key word here is 'too', in the sense that you should avoid to leave a slightly conceited or even outright condescending impression. So to cut this short: I am going to follow the advice by not taking it too seriously and hereby implicitly admitting, that basically I concur :-) No, no, no! Envy is based on comparison . And comparison is not something to be afraid of . Actuall y comparison is good ! How come millions of common people read the rainbow press every day and at the same time they are supposed to deny the fact that people are envious by nature and actually enjoy wasting time being envious, sometimes even to a selfdestructive point. This contradiction might sound virtuous but really misses the point. Maybe competitvene...

Consulting vs Smart-ass-ing 40 awesome tips of how consulting just doesn't work Recently I was confronted with a page on Facebook, that made me realize, why being a consultant and being a know-it-all must be different things. The page '40 Awesome Tips For A Happy And Healthy Life' is a great example for very poor consulting because it misses the point and by its imperative has an air of bigheadedness. As Facebook is FTW and the page was in English, these following lines will be in English in subsequence. So let's grab a glass of fine wine and have ourselves a field day with 40 tips, of how consulting should work and how it shouldn't. 1st suggestion of 40 Tips is to take a jog every day for 10-30 minutes. Fist of all: you don't jog. You run. N ot everyone likes to run. Some people are not even able to run, let alone every day. Think about handicapped people, obese people, people who have lives, work or other restrictions that prevent t hem from hav ing ...
