Eine Inspiration und eine Abschreckung

Nach langer Zeit habe ich mal wieder ein 'richtiges Buch', also kein Fachbuch, gelesen. Gekauft hatte ich die Biografie von Steve Jobs bereits vor einem Jahr, aber anschliessend war immer etwas wichtiger. Bücher lese ich normalerweise nur selten.

Gleich vorweg: ich habe mich nie für die Apple-Philosophie erwärmen können, Software und Hardware miteinander hart zu verdrahten und so einen sogenannten 'walled garden' zu errichten. Die Apple-tools haben mich auch nicht vom Hocker gehauen. Im Gegenteil: iTunes finde ich nach wie vor eines der grausamsten Stücke Software in der Geschichte von Software. Hätte ich nicht einige iPods, wäre mir das komplett egal. Da fängt es jedoch an: diese iPods sind einfach praktisch... cool ... schön ... unerreicht.
Meine Mutter ist da komplett das Gegenteil von mir. Ausser Mac kommt ihr nichts ins Haus. Sie hat mir mal eines ihrer iMacs (G5) überlassen. Ich habe es sofort bei e-bay reingestellt und mich noch gewundert, wie mir das olle Ding regelrecht aus der Hand gerissen worden ist.

Die Biografie von Steve Jobs ist eines der besten Stücke Literatur, das ich seit Langem gelesen habe. Das letzte Buch, das mich in ähnlicher Weise von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite gefesselt hat, war Charlie Wilson's War. Der phantastische Werdegang von Jobs, mit all seinen Höhen und Tiefen, ist an sich schon filmreifer Stoff. Walter Isaacson, der Autor, schafft es darüber hinaus auf
eine brilliante Art ein facettenreiches Bild vom Charakter und Wesen von Jobs zu malen. An manchen Stellen weiss man nicht, ob man über Jobs und seine Marotten vor Lachen in die Hose machen oder mit offenem Mund und aufgerissenen Augen nur den Kopf schütteln soll. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist die Szene, in der Jobs in einer Besprechung mit Managern eines Zulieferers die komplette Versammlung aufs Übelste rund macht und sogar beschimpft. Wer nach 'Steve Jobs' und 'Team FDA' sucht, wird schnell fündig.

Erstaunlich finde ich auch, dass Jobs anscheinend weder als Führungskraft noch in Punkto diplomatisches Geschick als Vorbild taugt. Dennoch hat er eine der, wenn nicht sogar DIE erfolgreichste Firma der Welt, geschaffen und dabei zahlreiche Branchen in kurzer Zeit radikal revolutioniert. Am meisten beeindruckt bin ich von der Zeit nach seiner Rückkehr zu Apple. Anschliessend musste bestimmt ein grosser Teil der Literatur über Innovation und Marketing neu geschrieben werden.

Vielleicht lese ich als nächstes mal ein Buch über Zen...oder kaufe mir noch einen weiteren iPod. Man kann nie zu viele von diesen Dingern haben :-)

Strategic Considerations To me it has always been of paramount importance to have a vision of my model identity. In order to develop towards that ideal my role models would help me strengthen that vision. One effective strategy to find fitting role models is to pick the right environment. Certain organizations will promote specific types of personalities over others. For example in the military there is a tendency to recruit engaging, clearly structured people who have a natural preference to take decisions and action in the face of danger, i.e. under pressure. Happiness And Anxiety

Just A Feeling Despite all the drawbacks caused by the pandemic I have to admit that ever since the kids were born I have been feeling more happy in general. To set the stakes even higher, I have already been pretty damned happy ever since I met my wife several years earlier.
